Just go already. What else can you do?

I followed him grudgingly through the brush.  He'd untied me earlier this morning and I had thought my limbs would fall off they felt so numb.   He gave me a little bowl of mashed tubers and told me to 'carb up.'   I assumed he meant to eat, and the tubers tasted dry and starchy in my mouth, only barely cooked.   And then he had me running around picking up camp so that we could leave.  He had developed a brisk impatience to him, as though he could not abide the thought of staying in one spot another moment.  I had to admit I felt terrified, wondering where he would take me, trying to stay out of his way while he stormed around dissembling our camp.   By the time all trace of our presence had been obliterated, I'd already worked up a sweat.

“Let's go,” Neviar said and shouldering his pack, started off in a direction with no other explanation.  He didn't even bother to look behind him to see if I followed.  Simply tromped through a thicket and down into a ravine.

I waited sulkily for a few yards while he made his noisy trail, wondering if I bothered going off with him at all.

Random snippets from recently

Stuff that transmitted recently...a rambling mess, as there are huge parts missing.

Unedited.

Expect nothing of me.

No matter where I went in life, I was used to traveling alone.  Across galaxies, over oceans, over land...nobody ever could keep up with my intensity of momentum.  Or at least, even if they tried, they didn't succeed.  I’d left more hapless but earnest adventurers eating my dust then I cared to recollect.   My employers always knew that I worked alone.  Pairing me with anyone on a mission was always destined to be a bad idea.   I wasn’t known as a friendly guy, and I didn't give a shit either way about what anyone thought of me.  I knew I was selfish, and I was completely okay with it.  Selfish was self-preservation.  Selfish had kept me alive more times than I could count.  With only myself to rely on, I could smash obstacles out of the way and take any risk that I pleased.  With only myself to look after, I was free to do whatever I wished, live however I liked. And the pitiful fools that had the misfortune of being partnered with me throughout the years had never been able to keep up.    I was too hard, too fast and too tough.  And that was the way I liked it.  It kept everyone off my back.  It kept me moving.

It kept me free.  Free to travel from one planet to the next, doing what I did best.  Which was disposing of all the psychic trash of the universe.  What could I say?  It was a gift.  Something I knew how to do, and I did it well.  And the only people who liked me were people who wanted to pay me to do their dirty work.  Slayers weren’t a dime a dozen anymore.  My value was listed in the bodies I’d managed to tally over the years.  Bodies of psions from star cluster to star cluster.  Stacks of them, all killed because they were too powerful to let live.   Too much of a risk for humanity to endure.   And truth be told, nothing I liked better than cutting them all down.   Bathing my blade in the blood of psionic monsters was a dirty, dangerous job, but somebody had to do it.

And that someone was me.

But occasionally, when I went to sleep at night, I didn’t like it much.  When the nightmares of a thousand psychic battles surged in the starless night, I woke up dripping with sweat, teeth grinding.  So many psions had tried to kill me and I’d come so close to death so many times that I told myself I was just a little paranoid.  But that was the thing about psi energy.  Once it touched you in the way it touched me, you’d never be the same again.    I told myself I had no choice, that humanity and psionic energy could not coexist.  It was impossible.  The proof had been what had happened to Earth.
Or what was left of it, after the Demise of Eden.

….the most extreme ordeal I’d ever gone through.

*
*

Duaire had told me of the psionic signal the Witnesses had sensed.  Because of the risky proximity of the object to the central singularity of the Milky Way Galaxy, the Witnesses feared that whatever object it was pulled energy from the super black hole for its psionic purposes.  It read like a psionic black hole, instead, on all the paraformic radars.

The sheer density of the object would erode the minds of any sentient creature who dared to venture near it…or at least the Witnesses theorized.   Whether the energy signature ventured forth from the black hole, or if it had yet to enter, the big concern was of a psionic frequency of such magnitude intersecting with Sagittarius A, the Milky Way’s super massive black hole.  They were quite concerned that the universe would not withstand the effects of such a mingling.

They considered me something of an expert on psionic phenomenon, having served in the armies of Earth and my role in the Demise of Eden.   The Demise had left Earth in shambles.  But I still called it home.   I did all of my gambling, my drinking and my fucking on the decrepit old planet’s war-blasted and crumbling cities.  It was where I went when I wanted to become nobody again.   Where people were too screwed in the head to notice you too had gone crazy a long time ago.  You could become just another anonymous fuck up.   Besides the tourist sites chronicling the Demise, Earth’s southern hemisphere lived on because the only people who would live in such a broken world were broken people.   And they arrived in hoards to find a place in the universe that could relate to them.  Or to escape a life rather not known.

*
*

Earth is broken.  And so are her people.

 *
*
“Go see what this signal is….”

*
*

So I left, with no more thought then, “easy money…”
*
*

“I don’t know what it is, it’s a planet, it’s a living hollow world, it’s a biosphere…I don’t know what it is.  But I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

“Is that where the signal is coming from?”

“I’m not sure where the signal is coming from.   I can’t tell if it’s an object, or a person, or an energy field.   But it is coming from this point by point sector.  I’m a little worried about what’s inside this thing.”

*
*
Of course they had wanted me to find out.

*
*

And now I stared down on the massive globe, which for all intensive purposes looked like an asteroid, except for the fact that its surface sprawled with massive vines that were visible from space.   There was no idea what the mass could be, except that it looked alien.

Things the voices say

"...it would be downright foolish of me to make mock of a desperate man with such a long sword and such a very short temper."

Exploring Anti-Psi

The psion curled on the ground, hand protecting its face, as though expecting a blow. Neviar stood, chest heaving over him, forcing himself in check, and sheathed his weapon, now feeling certain any threat had been subdued. He found it hard to believe that the psionic force he had sensed came from this small, strange person. Normally the psions in Plantasia did not register so strong on his radar. This one looked to be about thirteen or fourteen years of age, just at the cusp of physical maturity. Short black hair hung into its eyes, also a shining black. At first glance, the psion seemed human. But then, as Neviar stood there watching it cower, he saw the truth. With a glimpse of its face, he knew. The frame diminutive, the face just a little too delicate and pale, the ears an odd shape. This was no human Neviar stared upon, and he knew it after a moment of reflection.

 “What are you?” he asked.

The person sat up and stared at him. Large eyes, black and magnetic, regarded Neviar; surprisingly looking more furious then scared. Neviar felt a sweep of something against his mental shield, and then a force of energy hit him from the inside, a consciously delivered mental blow. The feel of someone's energy used against him in an aggressive way triggered Neviar into turning the attack back on the sender, just as an instinctual response. His mental shield had been forged into possessing a boomerang effect. Throughout the centuries Neviar had dealt with psionics on many worlds and had learned to adapt his body or mind to survive a great variety of attacks on his psyche.

He watched the kids face crumple in pain with the blow intended for him. Maybe if the psion had been more experienced, he would be able to get around Neviar's defenses. But just from the brief moments of mental contact they had shared Neviar could see that this psion had very little practice with his own gift.

“None of that,” he told the kid. “I know you're pissed, but just settle down for a moment and listen to me.”

Instead, the psion threw out his hand, and made a grab for his mind.

As soon as Neviar felt the tendrils of foreign energy filtering in to ensnare his consciousness, he fortified his mental shield. The wispy twirls of psionic intrusion grew more solid, and wrapped with a spasm around his mind, squeezing him tight. For just an instant, Neviar couldn't fight it; for just a second, he felt himself at the grip of another power, felt his body flood with the other, and felt his awareness sink to the background, like a stone gliding into mud. And then he caught himself, as he always tended to, and with a blade of sheer consciousness, severed the tendrils and all traces of a forced link.

They both fell to the ground after the brief but intense struggle. The psion looked exhausted, like maybe he was out of tricks. His entire body shivered after the tangle with Nevir's ego, skin now sheened in sweat. He seemed subdued.

Neviar hit him in the face anyway. There was nothing he hated more then a telepath who took advantage of people. He gave the psion a solid whack right in the face with the back of his hand, felt the crack of the kids jaw on his knuckles and thought he'd maybe done it a little hard.

The kid fell back, wailed like he was dying, and scrabbled at Neviar's mental shield in a desperate psionic way. The constant tittering of the telepath's mind rapping up against his own was getting frustrating fast.

“Look kid,” Neviar growled. “We have a long way to go, so you might as well pace yourself. You're coming with me.”

“Where are you taking me?” the psion cried, his voice a piercing lilt. He hunched on the ground and wept, and Neviar began to feel bad for hitting him. God, but the little twerp wouldn't stop messing with his head...

“Eveli, City of Dreams.  Look, as long as you keep your mind games in check, we'll get along fine. I won't hit you again. But if you keep acting like a brat and refusing to cooperate, I'll have to get rough. I don't want to, but I will.”

Enter: Neviar

So here's what's going on: Neviar has come into play. Yep, he's in the mix now, for better or for worse.   He started talking to me, and Kevin told me to use him.  USE HIM.  So I will.   It seems like with his presence in the story so many things are becoming clear. I NEEDED Neviar.  I just didn't realize it.  Kevin wants me to write about him so I will.   Neviar is bringing A LOT of good shit with him, including helping integrate and fuse Plantasia with Earth better, new perceptions of Plantasia, and new twists, turns and information to flesh out my plot with. I'm not QUITE sure how he fits in yet, but he DOES fill a very basic NEED of the story so well that I'm not going to argue against it. I'm just gonna flow with it. Because that's what I've learned to do. As torturous as it is, sometimes.

Plus it's downright hilarious at times to witness Neviar and Paetreyl interacting. Paetreyl is very psi and Neviar is very anti-psi and . So it's extremely fun sometimes to watch them play off each other.

It's also bringing attention to another group I need to highlight and develop: the WITNESSES.

They've been around for awhile, but I haven't acclimated them to Plantasia yet. It's a damn process getting everything figured out. I'm just doing my best to make it all work. I HAVE GOT TO. I am just FEELING like I have to kick into action and spend every waking moment with my novel. Except I'm still a mom of course. Still, every chance I get, I'M ON IT. At least sitting here with it...fathoming it...writing it, if it comes...

And SOMETHING always comes, that's the thing.

I am OBSESSED. I guess you kind have to be obsessed to write. But I am OBSESSED. All I want to do is work on my novel. It's all I want to do. This makes mothering difficult at times.

And I know my son should be my primary focus, and he IS. It's just that I am OBSESSED. All I want to do is work on my novel, and live in my characters mind. SERIOUSLY. It is taking SERIOUS EFFORT to keep myself grounded on “Earth” right now. I'm barely functioning as it is. All I want to do is work on my novel. So I do it every chance I get. But it's not enough. It never is. There is ALWAYS MORE.

I need to get this project done like you don't believe. I NEED TO. I feel it like a physical pain at this point. It actually HURTS ME if I'm not working on it. I constantly feel like I need to work on it. NOW. ALWAYS.

But I can't always. :( And it really really drives me nuts at times.

I strive not to resist it, and just stay in the moment with my beautiful son. He often gives me fresh inspiration. It's just that I have this other part of me too, an equally strong part, desperate to be expressed as soon as possible. So I am a multi-faceted being.

Finishing this novel is just something I need to do. NEED TO. I need to like I need air. If I don't do it, I am in utter suffering. It's just something I FEEL in my GUT. A signal has gone off big time. Like a gun going off. Like an alarm. Like a snap of the fingers. I gotta do this thing. I need to.
